The high court turned down a petition from Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky who objected on religious grounds to issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The Supreme Court chose not to revisit a case involving same-sex marriage. The number of married same-sex couples has doubled in the last 10 years.

In September, as the deadline approached, Hong Kong’s executive asked lawmakers to vote on a bill that would have granted limited rights to gay couples who got married or entered into civil partnerships abroad.
