PARIS (AP) — A glittering exhibition of royal jewels is opening Wednesday in Paris even as the city still reels from the brazen crown-jewel heist at the nearby Louvre Museum. The four-minute operation in October emptied cases in the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery, forced its closure and rattled public confidence in France’s cultural security.

Four more people were arrested Tuesday in connection with the Oct. 19 heist at the Louvre Museum, Paris prosecutors announced. All four — two men, aged 38 and 39, and two women, 31 and 40 — are from the Paris region, Laure Beccuau, a prosecutor for the city, said in a statement.

The 39-year-old man has six previous convictions and has now been handed preliminary charges of robbery by an organized gang.

On November 26, a water leak at Paris’ Louvre Museum damaged between 300 and 400 historical books in the Egyptology and scientific documentation section. Then, on December 8, workers at the museum voted to initiate a strike over poor working conditions. And that’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the Louvre’s overall woes so far this year.

Up to 400 documents have been damaged by the leak, according to Francis Steinbock, the deputy administrator of the museum. But no works of art were affected.

The police thought they were on the trail of sophisticated art thieves. The Belgian adventurer Honoré Joseph Géry Pieret had sold a Paris newspaper an Iberian statuette that he had stolen from the Louvre. He also mentioned having pinched a statue of a woman’s head from the museum and selling it to a painter friend.
