Patrick Mahomes’s 2025 campaign came to a devastating end on Sunday, as the Chiefs quarterback tore his ACL near the end of their loss to the Chargers. Mahomes was trying to lead the Chiefs to a comeback win and keep their slim playoff hopes alive, but instead saw both his and the Chiefs’ season playing meaningful football come to an end.
A day after the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee, coach Andy Reid shared that the MRI scan Sunday night revealed that the star quarterback didn't have any major damage to other ligaments.
Patrick Mahomes underwent surgery on Monday night to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. It wasn’t the only ligament injured, after all. Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Mahomes also tore the LCL in his left knee. Rapoport adds that, while it complicates the recovery, it doesn’t necessarily extend the timeline for a return beyond nine months.
Mahomes was down and in pain for several minutes and eventually had to be helped into the locker room by the training staff. Gardner Minshew entered in his place and played out the final drive for the Chiefs, only to be intercepted on his final pass attempt of the game, sealing both the loss and the Chiefs' fate.
Athletes are typically able to return from ACL tears within 6-12 months. Tom Brady's recovery from an ACL tear offers the most optimistic outlook for what Mahomes could expect.
