NEW YORK — The Rays made it a clean sweep of the previously major-league-best Mets on Sunday, rolling to a 9-0 victory. A three-run second inning that included one hit out of the infield, a two-run double by Jonathan Aranda and a three-run homer by Junior Caminero provided most of the offense.

It was a weekend to forget for the Mets. Sunday afternoon’s 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field marked the Mets’ most lopsided defeat of the year. It capped the first series in which they’ve been swept all season.

The Rays cobbled together a big inning for the second straight game, scoring five runs in the fourth to beat the Mets again, this time 8-4. Shortstop Taylor Walls had a big role in the win, delivering two doubles and dropping a squeeze bunt in the middle of the fourth-inning outburst.

The Mets had not lost a series at Citi Field since the Arizona Diamondbacks won back-to-back games there on April 30 and May 1.
