After coming close in the last two years, Monty the giant schnauzer won the top prize at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show Tuesday night, leaving handler and co-owner Katie Bernardin almost too emotional to speak. “He always tries so hard, and we’re just proud of him,” she told the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

Over 3,000 dogs from across the country and around the globe descend on New York City for the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, taking place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. The prestigious “Best in Show” will be crowned in Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, February 11, 2024.

It begins Saturday morning at the Javits Center convention hall with agility and obedience championships and some demonstration events, including Westminster’s first experiment with flyball. That’s essentially a canine relay race that involves running a course of jumps and retrieving a ball.

For the first time since 2020, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was back at Madison Square Garden. The longstanding competition had to relocate in each of the last four years,
