Maccelli scores 2 as Maple Leafs beat Oilers 5-2, head into Olympic break with 3 straight wins
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Matias Maccelli scored twice and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 on Tuesday night. Matthew Knies added a goal and an assist for Toronto (27-21-9). John Tavares scored his 20th of the season and Bobby McMann added an empty-netter.
This season has been anything but good for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nearly everything about the season has been a disappointment, and it does not look like they will make the playoffs.
Knies revealed the reason for the three missed games in November was due to a knee injury sustained earlier this season.
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston told First Up on TSN Radio 1050 Tuesday that “more than likely we’re talking about this team selling” with Toronto sitting seven points back of the Boston Bruins for the final wild-card spot.
William Nylander scored on a breakaway 35 seconds into the game and added two assists that helped the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Monday night. Matias Maccelli and defenseman Troy Stecher also scored as the Maple Leafs won their second straight following a six-game losing streak.
McMann’s Leafs and the Oilers are in drastically different spots in the standings. And so throughout the Leafs’ 5-2 win over the Oilers on Tuesday night, it was hard to escape the thought of seeing McMann trade blue and white for blue and orange in the next month or so. A McMann trade from Toronto to Edmonton might make sense in a few ways.
Saturday night is going to be a fun one at Rogers Arena as the Vancouver Canucks host the Toronto Maple Leafs in an all-Canadian matchup on Hockey Night in Canada. Nikita Tolopilo and Kevin Lankinen combined for a shutout on Thursday night against the Anaheim Ducks.
