Trump sues BBC for $10 billion, accusing it of defamation over editing of president’s Jan. 6 speech
President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit seeking $10 billion in damages from the BBC, accusing the British broadcaster of defamation as well as deceptive and unfair trade practices.
President Donald Trump sued the BBC for at least $10 billion in damages over edited clips of a speech that made it appear he directed supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol, opening an international front in his fight against media coverage he deems untrue or unfair.
The lawsuit landed just hours before a once-a-decade review of the broadcaster’s royal charter, which governs its mission, purpose and funding.
President Donald Trump’s contentious relationship with news organizations over his time in office has led to a host of legal battles and disputes.
Trump and his lawyers have accused the BBC of defaming him by splicing together two parts of a January 6, 2021 speech to make it appear he directed supporters to violently storm the U.S. Capitol. Trump has denied inciting the riot.
