A divided federal appeals court on Thursday said California's first-of-its-kind law requiring firearm owners to undergo background checks to buy ammunition is unconstitutional, violating the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

A federal appeals court upheld a ruling that struck down a background check requirement implemented by California on buyers of ammunition for firearms.

The lawsuit comes shortly after a bill cracking down on the shipment of abortion pills from out of state failed in the Texas Senate.

Southern California Edison has announced it will create a program to compensate victims of January’s devastating Eaton Fire near Los Angeles

California officials have not yet determined whether Southern California Edison caused the fire, which killed 17 people and destroyed thousands of properties.

The Eaton Fire’s cause is still under investigation, but Southern California Edison is planning to launch a fund to compensate those affected. Survivors say the utility is trying to “buy us off.”
