Down in Double-A Somerset, right-hander Luis Gil made the first start of his highly-anticipated rehab assignment, his first in-game appearance since he hurt his lat in spring training. The reigning Rookie of the Year in the American League threw 50 pitches, working 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, two hits and a walk.

Gil was scheduled to throw 50 pitches on Sunday and then build up his pitch count in subsequent rehab appearances.

The most promising update, though, is that Luis Gil—last season’s breakout ace—is ready to begin his rehab assignment. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Gil will start for Double-A Somerset this weekend, a crucial step in his road back.
