Australia will launch a national gun buyback scheme in the aftermath of a deadly attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach last weekend, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Friday.

Authorities in Australia have charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach on Dec. 14 that killed 15 people and injured 41 others, including four children.

An event to mark the first day of Hanukkah was taking place at Bondi Beach when the shooting took place, killing at least 15 people ages 10 to 87. Officials declared the shooting a terrorist event and said it was “designed to target” Jewish people.

Hundreds had gathered for an event at Bondi Beach called Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the start of the Hanukkah Jewish festival.

Australia is vowing to enact tougher gun controls after a targeted Hanukkah shooting at Bondi Beach leaves 15 dead and many people injured.

Preliminary evidence indicates Naveed Akram, 24, staged a “terrorist attack inspired by ISIS," police said Wednesday. The first funerals for victims were held under tight security.

Police and local media reports said the shooting began while some people were attending a Hanukkah party on the beach. At least 40 people were hospitalized.
