Shane Baz combined with three relievers on a five-hitter, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat New York 9-0 on Sunday to complete the first three-game series sweep of the Mets this season. Baz (6-3) allowed three hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings while striking out six and throwing a career-high 106 pitches.
NEW YORK — Shane Baz had lots of reasons to smile after Sunday’s outing in which he used his high-octane fastball and a good mix of his curve, changeup and reworked slider/cutter to hold the Mets to three hits while working into the seventh inning.
The Mets’ offense didn’t help their pitchers much either. Despite having traffic on the bases in all but one inning, they failed to score a run. In the end, they left 12 runners stranded and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Rays bat around in the 4th inning to score five runs and take a 6-2 lead, with Junior Caminero and Brandon Lowe leading the charge
