U.S. Coast Guard officials say they have launched a formal investigation into the sinking of a commercial fishing vessel off Gloucester, Massachusetts, that resulted in seven deaths.

Crews covered about 1,000 square miles (2,589 square kilometers) using aircraft, cutters and small boats over a 24-hour period.
