The National Weather Service said 8 to 10 inches of snow could fall by Monday morning. Chicago has activated more than 250 salt spreaders to keep roads clear for the morning commute.

Most of the Chicago area got to experience their first significant snowfall of the season this week, but that week is ending with soaring temperatures.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Northwest Indiana and the northern suburbs while much of the Chicago area has been downgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory.

It was another gorgeous day with plenty of sunshine and highs in the mid 50s. The average high temperature for November 13th is 50 degrees, so we came in a few degrees warmer than normal.

“The first freeze, which is when the temperature drops at or below 32 degrees, typically occurs between Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 across the Chicago suburbs and Oct. 21 to Oct. 30 in the city and along the lakeshore,” Brett Borchardt, meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Chicago office, told the Tribune.

With hundreds of flights canceled due to weather at Chicago airports, O'Hare is under a ground stop expected to last for several hours due to staffing issues. The airport closed for a time overnight.

Dangerous to near impossible travel conditions are expected due to intense lake effect snow through the Monday morning commute. Travelers can also expect dramatically reduced visibility due to snow accumulation and blowing snow.
