George Vanderbilt commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to help design his North Carolina home. To accomplish building a European chateau in rural North Carolina, Hunt focused on efficiency. The land in front of the home site was transformed into a mini-town with buildings and small factories that produced materials necessary for the construction of the house. An on-site kiln produced up to 32,000 bricks daily, and a woodworking factory supplied oak and walnut for the house’s floors and wal

Do you recognize this detail from Biltmore House's Library? This female figure is one of two that flank the Library fireplace's mantle, carved by #KarlBitter. Concealed by this mantle, there is an alternate entrance to the Library, where guests of the Vanderbilts could have easy access to nighttime reading selections before retiring to their rooms. #Biltmore #GildedAgeMansions | Biltmore

Over a century ago, renowned landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, transformed the acreage around Biltmore House from overworked woodland to the lush, natural landscaped experienced today. Intended to evoke a sense of mystery while creating the "...sensation of passing through the remote depths of a natural forest," the three-mile Approach Road that meanders from Biltmore Village up to Biltmore House is the result of a very intentional and complex design by Olmsted. | Biltmore
