🌲 In FY 2025, the BLM planted an impressive 5.5 million trees across America’s public lands. This large-scale reforestation effort supports ecosystem restoration, enhances biodiversity, and strengthens local communities. Through active land management the BLM is helping ensure our forests can thrive for generations to come! | BLM Oregon & Washington

Take 30 seconds to breathe and wander the trails of the Owyhee Wild & Scenic River. This wild river corridor flows through rugged, spectacular canyonlands and ash flows in southeastern Oregon. Thanks to its outstanding scenic, recreational, geologic, wildlife, and cultural values, the river was included in the National Wild and Scenic River System in 1984, meaning we can specially protect it. 📸 Greg Shine, BLM | BLM Oregon & Washington

“Our goal is to keep our public safe. People recreate on these roads to get to trail heads, to go hunting, to go foraging for mushrooms, to go running, or to ride their bike. All those things are valid and good reasons to do management.” Some of the most important work our foresters do is the removal of hazardous trees. These dead and dying trees make roads unsafe to travel. By removing them, we help keep local communities and people enjoying public lands safe! 🌲 Learn more about our forestry p

The BLM gathered 184 wild horses in the past week from two separate herds in southeast Oregon. Last Wednesday and Thursday, 134 wild horses from the Cold Springs Herd Management Area were gathered. Yesterday, another 50 wild horses from the Hog Creek Herd Management Area were gathered. Both herd management areas are in Malheur County. Here in Oregon, we manage about 10 million acres of sagebrush habitat. The sagebrush ecosystem sustains rural economies built on outdoor recreation, ranching, farming, and energy development, and are critical for more than 350 other wildlife species – including pronghorn, the pygmy rabbit, and (of course) the sage grouse. To take care of these crucial landscapes, our teams plant seedlings, monitor wildlife populations, and hand build stone terrain features! Our goal: creating resilient, producti

Fire is an essential, natural process, having shaped the landscape for thousands of years, releasing, and recycling nutrients from vegetation back to the soil. Prescribed fire reduces buildup of hazardous fuels, improves wildlife habitat, and reduces the risk of high-severity wildfire. | BLM Oregon & Washington

BLM designates area to protect the endangered Pacific Northwest Sasquatch 🌲🦍👣 The BLM is designating a new Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) to protect the Pacific Northwest Sasquatch (Gigantopithecus canadensis) following an extensive land use planning process. The species was long believed to be extinct. However, after several Sasquatch were positively identified on BLM public lands in eastern Oregon and southern Washington, the BLM launched a planning process that identified AC

"This is getting worse, it's not getting better. This is public land. It belongs to everybody." The illegal dumping of trash on public lands is an ongoing issue in Oregon and Washington. Our teams work hard to clean up as much waste as possible, but there is simply too much to clean on our own. In this video, hear a few of our specialists describe ways you can be a part of the solution. Always remember to leave no trace. It’s muddy season! Across the Pacific Northwest, we’ve been seeing high levels of rain, flooding rivers, and soggy trails and roads. If you plan to head outside, don’t forget to wear boots you don’t mind getting dirty! If you find a muddy road, please avoid driving on it whenever possible. Mudding on wet roads can cause damage to wildlife and make roads impassable for others. The activity can also destroy natural wildlife habitat, interfere with feeding and movement patterns, and push animals in

Several hundred wild horses gathered off the southern Oregon range due to declining health arrived recently at the Bureau of Land Management corral. About 700 horses were gathered from the Paisley Desert Herd Management Area last month due to a lack of water. The emergency wild horse gather used a helicopter to herd the animals into field pens placed among the sagebrush. Once gathered, the horses were separated by age and sex for the approximately 2-hour-long trailer ride from the town of Paisle

Our rangers just spotted the first salmon of the season yesterday in our salmon viewing window at Wildwood Recreation Site! Come see them near Welches, Oregon. Each fall, Oregon salmon begin their annual migration back to the spawning grounds where they were born. Right now, you can find them at Wildwood: at Sixes Creek, at the end of the Wetlands Loop, and through the viewing window. 📸 Karina Arellano, BLM | BLM Oregon & Washington

For the class final, the all-female crew of wildfire students dug fire line, rolled hose and burned slash piles in the eastern Oregon snow. The live burn exercise was the climax of the second annual Women in Wildland Fire Boot Camp, a BLM recruitment and retention tool that organizers hope will add diversity to the applicant pool for wildfire jobs. The boot camp is really a paid training opportunity, part classroom and part field work, for women to become certified for federal fire jobs, an indu

The fire was caused by lightning and is currently impacting Wasco, Sherman, Wheeler, and Gilliam counties. BLM-administered lands within six miles on either side of the John Day River are currently closed, and campfires are restricted until October 15th, or possibly longer.
