The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope observed the galaxy CANUCS-LRD-z8.6 just 570 million years after the Big Bang. Observations of its spectrum with Webb's #NIRSpec have revealed an accreting supermassive black hole at its centre 🕳️ one that is unusually large for a galaxy like CANUCS-LRD-z8.6. This combination – of a galaxy at an early stage of its evolution containing such a large black hole – challenges existing theories about the formation of these structures in the early Universe.
